The Differences When Planning Disneyland vs. Disney World

Are you planning a visit to the Happiest Place on Earth, Disneyland? There are a few key planning differences from Disney World that you’ll want to know.

Before we dive in:

Now, let’s jump into the important differences that will help you be fully prepared to experience the magic of Disneyland!

Disneyland App
The Disneyland app works very much like the My Disney Experience app at Disney World, but with one key difference: there’s no “Friends & Family” linking option. To book Lightning Lane Multi Pass or Single Pass for others not already on your account, you’ll need to scan their park tickets into your app as well as theirs. Don’t worry though—everyone can still use their own ticket to enter the park and scan into Lightning Lanes without any issues.

Entering the Park
When you scan into your first park at Disneyland, it will take your picture before entering instead of requiring a fingerprint. For those with multi-day passes, this only happens on the first day. After that, each time you enter, simply scan your ticket media and you’re good to go!

Another difference to note is the park opening experience. Unlike Disney World, there isn’t a big opening show at Disneyland or Disney California Adventure. At Disneyland, Cast Members do a short countdown before opening the ticket gates, then hold guests just before the different lands. Sometimes there’s a brief announcement, but it’s quick and simple. At Disney California Adventure, the gates just open (based on my experience, especially when entering through Disney’s Grand Californian entrance), and then guests are held at certain points until an announcement plays right before opening.

Park Hopping & Park Reservations
Disneyland still requires park reservations and has park hopping restrictions in place. Park hopping begins at 11:00 AM at both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.

When making your reservation, you’ll choose the first park you plan to visit that day. Starting at 11:00 AM, you can cross over and switch between parks as much as you’d like, subject to availability. If you haven’t entered any park before 11:00 AM, you can enter either park, regardless of which one you selected as your starting park.

If you’re using Lightning Lane Multi Pass or Single Pass, just be sure to book return times for 11:00 AM or later if you plan on hopping.

Hotels
Disneyland has only three onsite hotels: Pixar Place Hotel, Disneyland Hotel (which also includes Villas at Disneyland Resort), and Disney’s Grand Californian (with Villas at Grand Californian).

One big difference from Disney World is the number of nearby offsite hotels. Many are within easy walking distance to the parks—and some are even closer than the Disney hotels themselves.

While the onsite hotels offer great theming and perks, they can be pricey. If you want to be in the “Disney bubble,” it’s absolutely worth staying at a Disney resort. If you’re looking for a value or moderate option, though, staying offsite is often the better choice.

Early Entry
Disneyland offers Early Entry for guests staying at a Disneyland Resort hotel. Resort guests can enjoy 30 minutes of early access to a designated theme park each day of their stay. During this time, you can experience select attractions, dining, and shopping locations.

Look for the Early Entry signs and line up there before the official Early Entry time. A Cast Member will scan your MagicBand+ or ticket to verify that you’re a Disney Resort guest. Click here for Early Entry info.

Important update: Early Entry will be discontinued beginning in 2026. Instead, with each resort stay, each member on the reservation will receive 1 Lightning Lane entry.

MagicBand+
MagicBand+ is now available at Disneyland! If you purchased a MagicBand+ for Disney World, you can use the same band at Disneyland, as long as it’s linked to your Disneyland account. The older MagicBand 2 is not compatible with Disneyland.

Currently, MagicBand+ cannot unlock your Disney Resort hotel room at Disneyland. You’ll need either a Key to the World card from the front desk or your phone to access your room.

Transportation
Disneyland has only two parks—Disneyland and Disney California Adventure—making it very easy to walk between them and Downtown Disney. The entire area is very compact.

Disneyland also has a sleek monorail, but you must have a theme park ticket and park reservation for Disneyland to ride it. The monorail travels from Downtown Disney to Tomorrowland in Disneyland Park and back. It doesn’t always open early enough to be useful for park opening, so walking is usually faster, but it can save you some steps later in the day.

Pro Tip: The Disneyland Monorail sometimes allows guests to ride in the front car, which Disney World no longer allows. Just ask a Cast Member if it’s available.

Dining
Disneyland does not offer a Disney Dining Plan.

Dining reservations are highly recommended and can be made 60 days in advance, whether you’re staying onsite or offsite at a Disney or non-Disney hotel. Reservations are made one day at a time; they don’t automatically open for onsite guests all at once. Often, not all dining locations are loaded at the 60-day mark, so you’ll likely need to keep an eye on the app and check back for availability.

Even if you’re staying at a Disneyland Resort hotel, you’ll need to make daily dining reservations for your entire trip, each booked 60 days ahead for each day.

Dining reservations can be made online or through the Disneyland app, starting at 6:00 AM PST. I’ve also seen reservations for onsite guests appear as early as 3:00 AM PST on the web.

Keep in mind that some restaurants may not have confirmed their hours that far in advance, so they might show no availability at first and load at odd times. I highly recommend using a Disney Dining watch or alert so you don’t miss when reservations open.

The trickiest dining locations to book are Trader Sam’s, Blue Bayou, and Oga’s Cantina.

When making your dining reservations, you’ll be the lead guest for your party. Unlike Disney World, there’s no way to link other guests to your reservation. Your reservation will be for a set number of people under the lead guest’s Disneyland account, so make sure everyone traveling with you knows the plans—they won’t see the reservation in their Disneyland app.

Disneyland does offer discounts for certain guests, including Magic Key Holders (annual passholders) and Disney Vacation Club members. Be sure to inform your waiter if you’re a DVC member to receive your discount. If your affiliation is listed in the Disneyland app, certain quick service locations will automatically apply the discount when ordering through the app. Also, don’t forget to ask at merchandise locations to see if your discount is honored.

Refillable Popcorn Buckets & Mugs
At Disneyland, popcorn buckets and mugs are not refillable. You can still purchase them, but refills for popcorn or free refills for mugs (like those available at Disney World resorts) are not offered. Occasionally, they may offer limited-time refillable popcorn buckets for Magic Key holders, but not for the general public.

Lightning Lane Multi Pass, Single Pass & Premier Pass (Disneyland’s line-skipping options)
Lightning Lane Multi and Single Pass work similarly at Disneyland as they do at Disney World, with a few key differences. At Disneyland, you can purchase the Multi Pass as an add-on to your ticket, but you don’t actually book any selections until you’ve scanned into the park.

Once you’ve entered the park, you book Lightning Lane selections for the next available arrival window.

If you add it to your tickets before your trip, you’ll need to add it for each day. If you don’t plan to use it every day, you can purchase it on the day of your park visit for the days you want.

The Premier Pass is available for purchase up to 7 days in advance. It doesn’t require you to book any Lightning Lane selections ahead of time—you simply enter the park and scan into attractions. Each Premier Pass can be used once per attraction.

It’s helpful to arrive early at the parks so you can begin booking Lightning Lane Multi or Single Pass selections as soon as you scan into the park.

Fireworks & Nighttime Shows
Disneyland fireworks occur on select nights and vary by season, generally running more frequently during peak times like summer, holidays, and school breaks, with nightly shows during these busy periods. During slower times, they are usually limited to weekends (Friday through Sunday), so be sure to check the schedule just before your visit. All fireworks are weather-dependent and can be changed or canceled. Cancellations happen more frequently at Disneyland due to strong winds, so it’s a good idea to try to see them early in your trip in case one gets canceled.

Keep in mind that parts of Fantasyland and Mickey’s Toontown close during fireworks, as does the monorail. Several areas of Fantasyland will be roped off, so make sure you’re in position before the show—it can be tricky to navigate around the castle once the fireworks start.

A great tip: you can see the fireworks from the Esplanade between the two parks, even without a park ticket. While you won’t see the castle, you can still enjoy the music and fireworks. Bring a blanket and some snacks for a more relaxed, less crowded experience—it’s pretty magical!

Castle Pictures
If you want that iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle photo, make sure to head closer to the castle itself. Sleeping Beauty Castle is only 77 feet tall, so from the front of the park, it doesn’t appear as prominently in photos.

Weather
California weather is generally glorious, especially compared to Orlando. Even in the middle of summer, it’s common to have cool mornings and evenings. Days can still get quite warm, so be sure to dress in layers or at least bring a light sweater or sweatshirt for mornings and evenings.

Characters
Characters are everywhere in Disneyland, and many roam around without a Cast Member handler. This makes for a more spontaneous experience and often shorter waits to meet your favorites. Of course, the usual meet-and-greet characters will still have longer lines, but it’s not unusual to spot some rare characters roaming the park!

Virtual Queues
At Disneyland Resort, Virtual Queues take place at 12:00 PM. Currently, the only virtual queue in use is for World of Color Happiness, the nighttime spectacular show in Disney California Adventure.

To join the queue, you must have entered Disney California Adventure or Disneyland Park (if you have a park hopper). While you can still watch World of Color Happiness without the virtual queue, your view may not be as good. The virtual queue guarantees a spot in a designated viewing area.

In the past, Virtual Queues have also been used for the newest rides. You can easily access the queue through the Disneyland App.

If you’re driving to Downtown Disney, there is a parking fee. For complete pricing and details, click here.

As you can see, there are a few key differences between Disneyland and Disney World, so be sure to keep them in mind when planning your trip. Enjoy your visit to Walt’s Park, the Happiest Place on Earth!
