Walt Disney World Resorts 101: Are they worth it?

Boat dock at Disney's Wilderness Lodge

When planning a Walt Disney World vacation, one of the biggest questions is whether to spend the money to stay onsite at a Disney Resort. Is it even worth it, especially since some of the perks have changed over the years?

Without a doubt, my answer is always yes. In short, if you really want the full Disney experience to feel as seamless and magical as possible, and your budget allows, I recommend staying onsite. I’d personally choose a Disney Value Resort over an offsite moderate or deluxe hotel like a Hilton, Marriott, or even the Four Seasons. We’ve stayed offsite at a few nice hotels just for comparison.

For clarity, “Disney Resorts” are those owned and operated by Disney. There are a handful of hotels, especially around Disney Springs, that are technically on Disney property but not run by Disney. While Disney resorts can be expensive, they offer a range of price points to fit nearly every budget, all without sacrificing the service and theming Disney is known for.

In this blog, I’ll break down the pros and cons of each Disney Resort category and share my personal thoughts on them. We’ve genuinely enjoyed every one, but definitely have favorites, so I’ll go into more detail on those below. I’ll also include a non-Disney resort option at the end that offers all the perks of a Disney Deluxe Resort but at a lower price.

First, let’s talk about why staying onsite at a Disney Resort might be the right choice for your trip:

1. Early Theme Park Entry

Disney Resort guests can enter any theme park 30 minutes before the official opening every day. For example, if EPCOT opens at 9:00 a.m., Resort guests can start riding at 8:30 a.m.—a huge perk!
This replaces the old Extra Magic Hours, which only applied to certain parks on certain days. Now, every park opens early daily for onsite guests. Offsite guests are already at a disadvantage, even if they arrive at opening, because Resort guests are already in line for top attractions.

2. Advance Dining Reservations (60+10)

Everyone can book dining 60 days in advance, but Disney Resort guests can book for their entire trip at once (up to 10 days). This gives a much better chance of grabbing hard-to-get reservations like Cinderella’s Royal Table or Space 220.

3. Lightning Lane Multi Pass & Single Pass Booking (7 Days Before)

Resort guests can book their Lightning Lanes (Disney’s line-skipping system) 7 days before their trip, for their entire stay (up to 14 days). Offsite guests can only book 3 days ahead, making it harder to grab top-tier attractions.

4. Free Parking at Parks and Resorts

Resort guests don’t pay for parking at the Disney parks or at their hotel. Offsite guests pay $30 per day to park at the theme parks.

5. No Resort Fees

Many offsite hotels now tack on high resort fees. Disney Resorts do not charge any resort fees, which can make them a better value than they seem at first glance.

6. MagicBand & MagicBand+ Discounts

Guests staying at a Disney Resort get discounts on MagicBands and MagicBand+ if ordered in advance. While not required, they’re super convenient, reusable for future trips, and fun to wear.

7. Free Disney Transportation

Resort guests enjoy free transportation around Walt Disney World—bus, boat, monorail, and Skyliner. These options are especially easy to access from Disney Resorts, making it simple to get around without a car.

8. Access to the Disney Dining Plan

Only Resort guests can purchase a Disney Dining Plan. Choose from a Quick Service Plan or the standard Disney Dining Plan, which includes meals, snacks, adult beverages, and a refillable souvenir mug and can save you money. ,

9. Online Check-In

Skip the front desk entirely. With online check-in, you’ll get a text with your room number when it’s ready. Use your MagicBand, MagicBand+, or the My Disney Experience app to unlock your door and head straight to your room.

10. Charging Privileges

When staying onsite, you can use your MagicBand, MagicBand+, or a Key to the World Card to charge food and merchandise purchases to your room. Just make sure you’ve added a credit card to your account.

11. Free Water Park Entry on Check-In Day

Disney Resort guests will get free admission to one of Disney’s water parks—Blizzard Beach or Typhoon Lagoon—on their check-in day. A great way to kick off your trip! This is available for all of 2025, and Summer of 2026.

View of EPCOT (Spaceship Earth) from the BoardWalk Villas.

12. Extended Evening Hours (Deluxe Resort Guests Only)

Guests staying at a Disney Deluxe Resort, Deluxe Villas Resort (Disney Vacation Club), or select non-Disney resorts—like the Swan, Dolphin, Swan Reserve, or Shades of Green—get an extra perk: Extended Evening Hours.

This benefit allows you to stay in select parks for two additional hours after closing on select nights. It’s typically offered twice a week, most often at EPCOT on Mondays and Magic Kingdom on Wednesdays. Occasionally, you may see Hollywood Studios or Animal Kingdom as an option during certain seasons or a shift in the days offered.

These extra hours are a game changer. The crowds are lighter, the lines are shorter, and the cooler evening temperatures make it even more enjoyable. There’s something truly magical about closing down a nearly empty park after most guests have gone home.

Make sure to check the official Walt Disney World calendar or the My Disney Experience app for the most up-to-date Extended Evening Hours schedule, as park offerings and dates can change.

An Introduction to Disney Resorts

Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campgrounds

Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort offers two types of accommodations that fall into different categories: campsites, which are considered Value, and cabins, which are part of Disney Vacation Club (DVC), considered Deluxe Villas.

This isn’t your typical campsite—it has that special Disney magic throughout. You can choose from regular campsites or premium sites that are closer to amenities. Plus, there are tons of recreational options on property, making it a true escape from the hustle and bustle of the parks.

Getting around is easy with boat service to Magic Kingdom and bus transportation to all the other parks.

On-site, you’ll find a quick-service dining hall, a popular dinner show, camper-friendly showers and facilities, occasional food trucks, and plenty more. Because the property is large and spread out, renting a golf cart through Disney is highly recommended, but keep in mind they book up fast.

Campsites

The campsites at Fort Wilderness are the most affordable way to stay on Disney property. They can accommodate both RVs and tents. While they receive all the standard Disney Resort perks, they do not qualify for Extended Evening Hours.

Cabins

The cabins at Fort Wilderness were recently replaced, and are now part of the Disney Vacation Club. Anyone can rent them, and because they are classified as DVC and a Deluxe resort, they include all Disney perks, including Extended Evening Hours.

Tinker Tanchez Thoughts

We haven’t had the chance to stay at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort, but we’ve visited several times to enjoy the restaurants and amenities. There is so much to do here! The Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue, Chip ‘n’ Dale’s Campfire Sing-Along, plenty of outdoor activities, and if you’re staying here, you can even rent a golf cart to explore the grounds. If you enjoy outdoorsy activities, this is a fantastic option! The cabins are dog-friendly but must be booked as pet-friendly accommodations.

All-Star Sports

Value Resorts

Value Resorts are known for their bright colors, bold theming, and large statues that make a big visual impact. They’re also the most affordable option for staying onsite at Disney.

Rooms in Value Resorts typically have exterior hallways for access. The standard rooms are about 260 square feet and can sleep up to 4 people plus a baby in a crib.

There are two exceptions:

  • Disney’s Art of Animation Family Suites (around 565 sq. ft.)
  • Disney’s All-Star Music Resort Family Suites (around 520 sq. ft.)

Both suites include two full bathrooms and can accommodate up to 6 guests plus a baby.

Dining Options

Value Resorts feature large food courts with multiple stations offering a variety of meals and snacks. There’s also a poolside bar for drinks and light bites. While room service isn’t available, you can order whole pizzas from the quick service food court to enjoy in your room.

Pools

Each Value Resort has a pool, but you won’t find water slides or hot tubs here. The pools are perfect for cooling off and relaxing after a day in the parks.

Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort

Recently refurbished, this resort features themed sections based on favorite movies like The Mighty Ducks, Toy Story, 101 Dalmatians, Fantasia, and The Love Bug.

Rooms come with two queen beds—one queen bed plus a Murphy pull-down queen that can also function as a table with chairs—or a single king bed by request (not guaranteed).

Transportation

Bus service only.

Pros

  • Very affordable
  • Strong, fun theming throughout
  • Large food court with plenty of options

Cons

  • Large resort, which can get noisy, especially with school and sports groups staying here
  • Buses are sometimes shared between all the All-Star Resorts, which may add to wait times
  • A bit farther from the parks than some other resorts
  • Avoid pool-view rooms if you want to stay away from noise

Tinker Tanchez Thoughts

We love this resort, especially given its price. The rooms are on the smaller side but feel clean, well-organized, and perfect for families. The theming is super fun, and kids would love it here. Highly recommend!

Disney’s All-Star Music Resort

Recently refurbished, this resort is divided into sections themed to Jazz, Rock, Calypso, Broadway, and Country music.

Rooms feature two queen beds—one queen plus a Murphy pull-down queen that can double as a table with chairs—or a single king bed available by request (not guaranteed).

Family Suites

All-Star Music also offers Family Suites, which are two-room accommodations for up to six guests. These suites include two bathrooms, a separate bedroom, a living room area, and a kitchenette with a fridge, microwave, coffee maker, and sink. They provide great value for larger families. Click here to view the Family Suites.

Transportation

Bus service only.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Strong, fun music theming
  • Plenty of food court options
  • Family Suites available for bigger groups

Cons

  • Large resort that can get noisy, especially with school and sports groups staying
  • Buses sometimes shared between All-Star Resorts, which can increase wait times
  • Slightly farther from the parks than some other resorts
  • Avoid pool-view rooms if you want to avoid noise

Tinker Tanchez Thoughts

Like All-Star Movies, this resort is an excellent choice—especially considering its price point. If you have a music lover in your group, this is the perfect spot! The rooms were recently updated and offer a great way to stay on budget while still enjoying your Disney trip.

Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort

Recently refurbished, this resort features themed sections inspired by sports favorites like Hoops Hotel, Surf’s Up, Center Court, Home Run Hotel, and Touchdown.

Rooms include two queen beds—one queen and one Murphy pull-down queen that can double as a table with chairs—or a single king bed available by request (not guaranteed).

Transportation

Bus service only.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Strong, fun sports theming
  • Plenty of food court options

Cons

  • Can get loud as this resort is a popular choice for school and sports groups
  • Buses are sometimes shared between the All-Star Resorts, which may increase wait times
  • Avoid pool-view rooms if you want to minimize noise

Tinker Tanchez Thoughts

All-Star Sports, like the other All-Star Resorts, has been updated and remains a great value option. A fair warning: many cheer and school groups often stay here, so it can be a bit louder than other resorts. That said, if you have a sports fan in your group, this is definitely the place to be!

Disney’s Art of Animation Resort

This resort offers standard rooms in the Little Mermaid section and family suites in themed areas like Cars, Finding Nemo, and The Lion King. The theming here is truly impressive, especially in the Cars section.

Family Suites

This resort offers Family Suites in 3 themed sections- Finding Nemo, Lion King, and Cars. These suites comfortably sleep up to six guests and feature separate sleeping areas, a kitchenette, and two bathrooms—perfect for families who want extra space and convenience while staying in a fun, colorful setting. Click here to view a family suites.

Transportation

Disney’s Skyliner provides quick access to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios, along with a few other Disney resorts. Bus transportation is available to Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom.

Pros

  • One of the best-themed resorts at Disney
  • Convenient access to the Skyliner
  • Large food court with lots of options
  • Dog-friendly in select areas—just be sure to book the dog-friendly option if that’s important to you

Cons

  • Large resort, so the Little Mermaid rooms are quite a walk from the lobby and food court
  • Family Suites can be pricey

Tinker Tanchez Thoughts

We’ve stayed at Art of Animation multiple times—in both the Little Mermaid standard rooms and Family Suites—and really enjoyed our stays. The Little Mermaid rooms are farther from the main areas, but the Nemo Suites are very close to the lobby and food court. The Family Suites include a kitchenette with a small fridge, microwave, and coffee maker. Their food court offers plenty of choices for all meals. With the Skyliner on-site, this resort is a great option for families looking for easy park access. The resort theming is some of the best, and I highly recommend you at least visit just to appreciate it!

Disney’s Pop Century Resort

Recently refurbished, this resort is divided into sections themed to the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s.

Rooms feature two queen beds—one queen plus a Murphy pull-down queen that doubles as a table with chairs—or a single king bed available by request (not guaranteed).

Transportation

You can travel via Disney’s Skyliner, which connects to EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and several other resorts. Bus service is available to Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom. Unlike other Value Resorts, Pop Century does not share buses with any other resort.

Pros

  • Fun, nostalgic theming with giant icons like a Rubik’s Cube and Big Wheel
  • Convenient Skyliner access
  • No shared buses, making transportation smoother
  • A lively, colorful atmosphere
  • Lots of options in the food court

Cons

  • Busy resort, which means some areas can be noisy
  • Avoid pool-view rooms if you want to escape the noise

Tinker Tanchez Thoughts

Pop Century is my favorite Value Resort and the one I book most often. The theming is colorful and playful, with each section dedicated to a different decade and huge, fun props scattered throughout. They even play music from each era around the resort. The food court offers plenty of options for every appetite.

The rooms are family-friendly with plenty of storage, and the Murphy bed is a smart addition that frees up space when folded away. Between the Skyliner access and the overall atmosphere, Pop Century has truly become my top pick among Value Resorts.

Disney's Gran Destino Tower at Coronado Springs Resort

Moderate Resorts

Moderate Resorts are larger properties with beautiful landscaping and great views. The theming is less bold compared to Value Resorts but still charming and immersive.

Most rooms are accessed via exterior hallways, except for the Gran Destino Tower at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, which offers interior entryways.

Rooms typically measure around 314 square feet and sleep up to 4 people plus a baby in a crib. A few resorts offer rooms that accommodate 5 people plus a baby—these include Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside and Disney’s Caribbean Beach with their 5th Sleeper Rooms.

The resort offers a Club Level experience for select rooms in the Gran Destino Tower, providing exclusive access to the Gran Destino Club Lounge. Guests enjoy complimentary food and drinks, personalized concierge service, enhanced room amenities, private check-in and check-out, and a quieter, more private floor experience.

Dining Options

Moderate Resorts feature a large food court, a pool bar, and at least one table service restaurant.

Pools

You’ll find a feature pool with a slide at each resort, plus quieter pools at some locations and hot tubs to relax in.

Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort

Transportation: Disney’s Skyliner connects you to EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and several other Disney resorts. Bus service is available to Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom.

Pros

  • Beautifully themed resort with a stunning feature pool
  • Great dining options, including Sebastian’s Bistro, one of our favorite table-service restaurants
  • Newly refurbished rooms in the Trinidad section themed to The Little Mermaid, Under the Sea—bright and inviting
  • Plenty of room options that sleep 5

Cons

  • The resort is very large, with multiple internal bus stops, which can make getting to the parks more challenging
  • Depending on your room location, you may have a longer walk to the lobby, food court, or Skyliner station

Tinker Tanchez Thoughts

Caribbean Beach Resort is beautiful and relaxing. Though it’s quite large, being on Disney’s Skyliner is a major perk. Just keep in mind that if your room is close to the Skyliner station, you might be farther from the lobby and main building. The new 5th sleeper Under the Sea rooms are beautiful and thoughtfully designed. Sebastian’s Bistro is one of our favorite dining spots here.

Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort

Transportation: Bus service only.

Pros

  • Beautifully landscaped resort with the upscale Gran Destino Tower, featuring interior room entryways that give it a more deluxe feel
  • The rest of the resort has exterior doors
  • Some of the best dining options on property, including Toledo, a personal favorite
  • Peaceful atmosphere, especially in the back areas like the Ranchos, which tend to be quieter
  • Full fitness center available
  • The resort offers a Club Level experience for select rooms in the Gran Destino Tower, providing exclusive access to the Gran Destino Club Lounge. Guests enjoy complimentary food and drinks, personalized concierge service, enhanced room amenities, private check-in and check-out, and a quieter, more private floor experience.

Cons

  • Very large resort with multiple internal bus stops, which can make getting to the parks more challenging
  • Bus is the only transportation option here
  • Long walks between the lobby/dining areas and the back of the resort (the Ranchos area), though this is a favorite spot for those who enjoy the walk

Tinker Tanchez Thoughts

This is our favorite Moderate Resort. The theming is beautiful, and the overall atmosphere is peaceful. Dining options are excellent, especially Toledo. We prefer having a car when staying here due to the bus system, although the bus is convenient for trips to Magic Kingdom. The feature pool is fantastic, with a fun slide, and the quiet pools are perfect for relaxing.

Disney’s Port Orleans – French Quarter

Transportation: Bus service to the theme parks and boat service to Disney Springs.

Pros

  • Beautiful, fun Mardi Gras theming
  • Delicious quick-service dining with the resort’s famous beignets
  • Small and compact layout with only one bus stop, making it easy to get around
  • Relaxing boat ride to Disney Springs
  • Home to Scat Cat’s Club, a jazz lounge and café that sometimes features live entertainment
  • Rooms were recently updated and are gorgeous

Cons

  • Bus service is the only option to get to the parks
  • No table-service restaurant onsite, though you can easily walk to Riverside for Boatwright’s Dining Hall

Tinker Tanchez Thoughts

French Quarter is one of the prettiest resorts with its vibrant Mardi Gras theme. The food is wonderful, and the beignets are absolutely delicious. We also love that there’s a jazz club on property for a fun evening out. The compact size and single bus stop make it very convenient, and the peaceful atmosphere adds to the charm. Taking the boat to Disney Springs is a relaxing bonus. This is another favorite resort of ours, and highly recommended.

Disney’s Port Orleans – Riverside

Transportation: Bus service to the theme parks and boat service to Disney Springs.

Pros

  • Beautifully themed, peaceful resort
  • Offers 5th sleeper rooms and unique Royal Guest Rooms, which are princess-themed and stunning
  • Good food court options
  • Enjoyable boat ride to Disney Springs
  • Offers horse-drawn carriage rides
  • Dog-friendly in select areas—be sure to book accordingly

Cons

  • Large resort with multiple internal bus stops, which can make getting to the parks more challenging
  • Table-service dining options are limited in quality
  • Depending on your room location, you might have a longer walk to the lobby and dining areas

Tinker Tanchez Thoughts

We stayed in a Royal Guest Room and really enjoyed the experience. The resort is quite large, and the bus system with multiple stops was a bit inconvenient for us. However, the peaceful atmosphere makes it a wonderful choice for families, especially those needing 5th sleeper rooms. We prefer to have a car when staying here for easier transportation.

Deluxe Resorts

These resorts tend to be the most expensive, but also offer the most perks, as guests that stay at a Deluxe Resort can access Extended Evening Hours at select parks on select days. Deluxe Resorts offer a variety of room types and sizes, with the smaller ones around 344 square feet and sleeping 4 plus a baby, all the way up to suites and rooms with Club Level access (a club lounge offering food and drink options throughout the day, included in a Club Level reservation). Access to the rooms is via an interior hallway, and most rooms have a balcony or patio. They also tend to be quieter than the value and moderate resorts. Some of the resorts have very unique theming.

Dining Options

Deluxe Resorts offer a smaller quick-service food court, but several Table Service options, as well as a Signature/Fine Dining Restaurant. They also have a poolside bar and at least one indoor bar or lounge. Some Deluxe Resorts offer room service.

Pools

They offer a feature pool with a slide, a quieter pool(s) at some, a hot tub(s), and a splash pad for kids at a few.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge & Villas

Transportation: Bus service only

Pros

  • Animal Kingdom Lodge is often the most affordable Deluxe Resort and has some of the most unique theming at Disney
  • Several savannas with roaming animals can be viewed from the lobby areas, and savanna-view rooms are truly special
  • The resort feels like a peaceful retreat from the parks
  • Dining is excellent, with some of the best food options in all of Disney World
  • Rooms are well-themed and beautiful
  • The main pool area is spacious with a zero-entry section
  • You can walk or take the internal shuttle to Kidani Village to enjoy their pool and splash pad
  • A full gym is available
  • Cast Members are especially knowledgeable and offer fun, educational, animal-themed activities

Cons

  • Transportation is only by bus
  • The resort is one of the farthest from Magic Kingdom, about a 15 to 20 minute ride
  • Buses are shared between Jambo House and Kidani Village
  • Hallways are long, so depending on your room location, the walk to the lobby or amenities may be lengthy

Tinker Tanchez Thoughts

We love this resort. It truly feels like an escape from the busy Disney parks, with so much to do right on property. You could easily stay here and never visit the parks and still have an incredible trip. Make sure to plan for some resort time if you are staying here. The food is absolutely some of the best on property.

Disney Vacation Club Villas at Animal Kingdom Lodge (Kidani Village & Jambo House)

Overview:

A few villas are located in Jambo House, but most are at Kidani Village. Kidani is quieter and more peaceful, with much less foot traffic than Jambo. It also has one of the best splash areas for kids and a zero-entry pool with a fun slide.

Villas include Studios with kitchenettes that have a microwave, toaster, and sink, as well as 1-bedroom and larger villas with full kitchens. At Kidani specifically, 1-bedrooms have 2 bathrooms, 2-bedrooms have 3 bathrooms, and 3-bedrooms have 4 bathrooms. The rooms at Kidani are a bit dated but are spacious, functional, and have great theming.

Disney’s Beach Club Resort & Beach Club Villas

Transportation:

  • Walk or boat to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios
  • Bus to Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom
  • Skyliner access nearby for visiting other resorts

Location: Behind EPCOT on Crescent Lake, just a 5-minute walk to EPCOT

Pros

  • One of the most beautiful and charming areas in all of Disney World
  • Beachy, relaxed theme that is very family-friendly
  • Shares the incredible Stormalong Bay pool complex with the Yacht Club, which includes a lazy river, sand-bottom pool, and great slide
  • Dining highlights include Cape May Café with a fun character breakfast and Beaches and Cream, a nostalgic diner-style spot famous for its ice cream and the over-the-top Kitchen Sink sundae
  • During the holidays, features a gorgeous gingerbread carousel and festive lobby décor

Cons

  • The resort can get busy during the holidays
  • Cape May Cafe offers seafood for dinner, and the smell can waft into the lobby (though it’s always gone by morning)

Tinker Tanchez Thoughts

Beach Club has been one of our long-time favorites and only slipped a little when the rooms got dated—thankfully, they’ve since been refurbished. This is a great resort for families or anyone who wants to be close to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios. The views of Crescent Lake are beautiful, and you can catch EPCOT fireworks from some rooms.

That said, Stormalong Bay is enormous and can be tough to keep track of young kids. The slide entrance is across the walkway, outside the gated pool area, which makes it tricky for little ones. The lazy river is a great feature but fairly deep, so not ideal for smaller kids. On the upside, there is a shallow sand-bottom area where kids can build sandcastles, making it much easier to supervise.

If you’re staying here, I definitely recommend planning a resort day to enjoy the full experience of this amazing pool complex.

Disney Vacation Club Villas – Beach Club

The Beach Club Villas are located in a separate building connected by a covered walkway to the main resort. The rooms were recently renovated and are beautiful. Views aren’t a strong point here, with most rooms overlooking the quiet pool or trees, but you might catch glimpses of fireworks through the treetops.

The quiet pool is convenient and relaxing, and guests have full access to the main feature pool, Stormalong Bay. There’s also a small path behind the Villas building that leads directly to the EPCOT walkway, making park access super convenient.

Disney’s BoardWalk Inn & Villas

Transportation options:

  • Walk or boat to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios
  • Bus to Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom
  • Skyliner access nearby for visiting other resorts

Pros

  • Located behind EPCOT on Crescent Lake, one of the most beautiful and peaceful spots at Disney World
  • BoardWalk Inn has charming, whimsical theming with a relaxed atmosphere
  • Closest resort to Hollywood Studios with an easy and peaceful walk
  • Flying Fish, the signature restaurant, is one of the best on property
  • Resort location provides easy access to many other dining options
  • Recently added a new coffee shop inside the hotel, perfect for mornings
  • Rooms were recently updated and are absolutely gorgeous
  • Full gym available
  • Garden Room Cottages are a major standout—adorable two-level rooms with private courtyards, ideal for honeymoons or anyone wanting extra charm and privacy

Cons

  • No quick-service location inside the hotel, so you’ll need to head to the Boardwalk for food, which can be inconvenient if it’s raining
  • Feature pool is smaller than others but does have a great slide
  • Long hallways can mean a bit of a walk depending on your room location

Tinker Tanchez Thoughts

This is my absolute favorite hotel in all of Walt Disney World. The location is unbeatable—gorgeous, peaceful, and incredibly convenient. The newly renovated rooms on the hotel side are some of the prettiest on the property. I love having so many dining options right outside the door, plus all the options at EPCOT are just a short walk away. Being able to walk to both EPCOT and Hollywood Studios makes the trip feel much easier and more relaxing.

Disney Vacation Club Villas – BoardWalk Villas

Overview:
The DVC Villas at BoardWalk were recently renovated with stunning updates. The villas are located on the opposite side of the resort from the standard hotel rooms. There’s a great quiet pool nearby, along with a Community Center offering games, TV, and family activities. Hallways can be long, so depending on your villa location, you might have a bit of a walk.

Disney’s Contemporary Resort & Bay Lake Tower (DVC)

Transportation options:

  • Walk or take the monorail to Magic Kingdom
  • Monorail to EPCOT (with transfer at the Transportation and Ticket Center)
  • Boat to Magic Kingdom (also to Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness)
  • Bus to Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios

Pros

  • Recently renovated rooms with a sleek Incredibles theme
  • 2 Queen rooms with daybeds can sleep up to 5 guests
  • Most rooms offer incredible views
  • Monorail passes directly through the main building and is visible from Contempo Café (quick service) and Chef Mickey’s (character dining)
  • Two great table-service options: California Grill (signature prix fixe with some of the best views and Magic Kingdom fireworks) and Steakhouse 71 (another solid choice)
  • Walking to Magic Kingdom takes under 10 minutes and goes through its own security area, making it very convenient
  • You can catch the Electrical Water Pageant and Magic Kingdom fireworks from the hotel
  • Full gym on-site

Cons

  • Garden Wing rooms feel smaller, and only first-floor rooms have patios (no balconies on upper floors)
  • Resort can be busy with day guests, especially those visiting Chef Mickey’s
  • Overall style of the resort can feel sterile to some

Tinker Tanchez Thoughts

We’ve always been fans of Disney’s Contemporary Resort and Bay Lake Tower. Our preference is staying in the main tower or in the villas at Bay Lake Tower, as both sides of the building offer great views.

The Contemporary boasts some of Disney’s best dining options, including California Grill and Steakhouse 71. While the resort’s design can feel a bit sterile, Disney has refreshed the main tower rooms with an Incredibles theme and they did a great job. Bay Lake Tower is currently refurbishing its rooms as well and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend those either.

Bay Lake Tower (Disney Vacation Club Villas)

Overview:
Bay Lake Tower is the DVC property connected to Disney’s Contemporary Resort via a short, covered walkway. It shares all the amenities of the Contemporary but has its own separate building and pool. The villas are currently being updated and are beautiful, with a modern theme. The 1-Bedroom Villas and larger units are very spacious and include an extra bathroom, making them a great option.

The pool isn’t particularly themed, but it does offer beautiful views of Bay Lake. No matter which side your room faces, the views are a major perk — either Bay Lake or a Theme Park View with Magic Kingdom and fireworks. Just note there are no dining or quick service options inside Bay Lake Tower itself; all food and drink options are in the main Contemporary building, though the walk is short and covered.

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Villas

Transportation options:

  • Monorail or walk to Magic Kingdom
  • Monorail to EPCOT
  • Boat to Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort
  • Bus to Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios

Pros

  • Disney’s flagship resort with all rooms recently renovated
  • Rooms are elegant, bright, and filled with subtle Mary Poppins theming
  • Magic Kingdom is the first stop on the monorail from here
  • Lovely walkway to Magic Kingdom with its own security entrance
  • Dining options are some of the best on Disney property
  • Full-service spa and gym on site
  • Giant Gingerbread House in the lobby during the holidays, complete with a treat shop
  • Hand-decorated egg displays during Easter
  • Shops tend to be more upscale
  • Theme park view rooms offer beautiful views of Cinderella Castle
  • You can see Magic Kingdom fireworks and the Electrical Water Pageant from the resort
  • Being on the monorail makes getting around with strollers much easier—no folding required

Cons

  • Ongoing construction in the main building and lobby as of now
  • Some guests feel the resort can come across as a bit formal or stuffy
  • Lobby gets very crowded during the holidays with visitors coming to see the décor and displays

Tinker Tanchez Thoughts

We’ve always loved the Grand Floridian and never personally found it stuffy. That said, it was in serious need of a refurb for a while, and at the time, it was hard to justify the price. Now that the renovations are complete, the rooms are absolutely gorgeous, and the restaurants here are some of the best on property. Once the lobby construction is finished, this becomes a fantastic choice for both an adult-only getaway and families who want to stay close to Magic Kingdom. Once you step outside of the busy lobby, the resort is peaceful, elegant, and so relaxing, with views of Cinderella Castle in the distance. It feels upscale without being unwelcoming.

Disney Vacation Club Villas at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort

Overview:
The villas have been recently refurbished and are beautiful. The main DVC building includes studios, 1-bedroom, and larger villas, all connected to the main lobby via a covered walkway. In addition, the Big Pine Key building was converted into Resort Studios. These are more like traditional hotel rooms but still fall under the DVC category. They offer another great option for those looking to stay in a newly updated room with a resort feel.

Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort & Polynesian Villas and Bungalows

Transportation options:

  • Monorail or walk to Magic Kingdom
  • Monorail to EPCOT
  • Boat to Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort
  • Bus to Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios

Pros

  • Great Polynesian theming and feels like a true escape once you leave the lobby area
  • Cinderella Castle is visible in the distance, and theme park view rooms offer great views of it
  • Being on the monorail is very convenient with no need to fold strollers
  • Plenty of very good food options
  • Trader Sam’s is a popular tropical tiki bar with special effects inside and a patio outside
  • ‘Ohana offers a recommended character breakfast and a great dinner without characters
  • Dole Whip stand just outside the lobby
  • Feature pool and splash pad are amazing, as is the quiet pool
  • Walkway from Polynesian to the Ticket & Transportation Center allows monorail access directly to EPCOT, making it very convenient for both Magic Kingdom and EPCOT
  • Rooms have been refurbished with a beautiful Moana theme
  • You can view Magic Kingdom fireworks and the Electrical Water Pageant from the hotel

Cons

  • Disney built a new DVC Tower that blocks some of the sightlines from the resort, and adds more people
  • Very popular resort that books up quickly
  • Lobby can get very busy with guests staying elsewhere who love to ride the monorail and explore

Tinker Tanchez Thoughts

This is currently my favorite monorail resort. It feels more relaxed and family-friendly compared to the others. The DVC Tower being built doesn’t match the existing Polynesian theming, in my opinion, but is beautiful. I do wonder how the added guests might impact the monorail crowd levels. That said, the resort is absolutely stunning and easily the most popular monorail resort I book. Their Club Level is located in a separate building with amazing views and is one of our favorites.

Disney Vacation Club Villas:
The Polynesian Villas now include a beautiful DVC Tower that offers more room types and a modern feel. The studios and bungalows in the original DVC portion were recently renovated and spacious. Studios feature a split bathroom layout and are among the largest studios on property, sleeping up to five people, making them a great fit for families. We’ve stayed in the studios and really appreciated all the space and the convenience of the location.

The bungalows sit directly on the Seven Seas Lagoon with amazing views of Magic Kingdom and nightly fireworks. They include two full bedrooms, two full bathrooms, a small plunge pool on the deck, and can sleep up to eight people. They’re very expensive but offer a unique experience.

Disney’s Wilderness Lodge and Villas

Transportation options:

  • Boat to Magic Kingdom (also stops at Fort Wilderness and Contemporary)
  • Bus to Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and EPCOT

Pros

  • One of the most affordable Deluxe resorts, absolutely stunning with its massive lobby and cozy fireplace
  • Top pick for a holiday stay — the Christmas tree here is very impressive
  • Solid food options with something for everyone, including Story Book Dining at Artist Point, a character meal featuring Snow White, a few Dwarfs, and the Evil Queen
  • Rooms have been recently renovated and are beautiful
  • Feature pool and quiet pool are both great, with a geyser that erupts periodically
  • Overall vibe is peaceful and relaxing, making it feel like a true escape from the parks
  • The boat ride to Magic Kingdom is a highlight
  • Full gym located in the Boulder Ridge building

Cons

  • Bus transportation only to Animal Kingdom, EPCOT, and Hollywood Studios

Tinker Tanchez Thoughts

Wilderness Lodge is truly impressive and a gorgeous resort. From the moment you drive up to the lobby, you realize how special this place is. We love staying here, and the boat ride to Magic Kingdom is our favorite way to get there. Sometimes you can even catch the fireworks on the ride. For those wanting to be closer to Magic Kingdom or seeking a peaceful escape from the parks, I highly recommend this resort.

Disney Vacation Club Villas:
There are two sections of villas here — Boulder Ridge Villas, located in their own separate building connected by a covered walkway, and Copper Creek Villas, which are newer and part of the main building, converted from resort rooms. The Copper Creek Villas are beautiful but a bit on the smaller side. Boulder Ridge Villas feature their own building, lobby, fireplace, and cozy relaxation areas. These villas have been recently updated and are truly gorgeous, staying true to the resort’s rustic theming. Both villa options are great for guests needing more space.

Also on the property are the Cascade Cabins, which sit next to Bay Lake and are absolutely stunning. These cabins offer 2 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, a full kitchen, a large screened-in porch, and an outdoor hot tub. Personally, I think the cabins are even nicer than the Polynesian’s bungalows, though the bungalows have more impressive views. From the resort, you can also enjoy views of the Magic Kingdom fireworks and the Electrical Water Pageant.

Disney’s Yacht Club Resort

Transportation options:

  • Boat or walk to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios
  • Bus to Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom
  • Access to Skyliner for visiting select other resorts

Pros

  • Beautifully themed with an upscale, classic nautical feel
  • Located on Crescent Lake behind EPCOT, one of the most picturesque areas on property
  • Shares the incredible Stormalong Bay feature pool with the Beach Club
  • Rooms have a more masculine and elegant design
  • Excellent dining options with great table service restaurants
  • Short walk to additional dining choices at the Beach Club and around Crescent Lake
  • Full gym on-site

Cons

  • Quick service dining is quite small with limited options
  • Some guests feel Yacht Club is less family-friendly or a bit stuffy compared to Beach Club, due to the conferences that are often held here, though we have not experienced this
  • Beach Club and Yacht Club sometimes share buses, adding a little time to travel
  • Yacht Club is a few minutes further from EPCOT and Hollywood Studios than Beach Club

Tinker Tanchez Thoughts

This is our second favorite resort on Crescent Lake, with BoardWalk being our top pick. I recommend this resort often. The rooms here are some of our favorites, and we especially love their table service, particularly Ale & Compass Restaurant. It’s very convenient to walk to either Hollywood Studios or EPCOT, or take the boat there. Stormalong Bay is one of the best feature pools on property, and the quiet pool is great as well. From certain rooms, you can often see EPCOT fireworks and enjoy lovely views of Crescent Lake.

Disney’s Old Key West Resort (all Disney Vacation Club Resort villas)

Transportation Options:

  • Bus to all parks
  • Boat to Disney Springs

Pros

  • Very laid-back and relaxing atmosphere
  • Some of the largest rooms among DVC properties
  • Studios feature two queen beds (most other studios have one queen + Murphy bed)
  • Most patios offer beautiful views
  • Olivia’s Café is a hidden gem with excellent food
  • Beautiful and convenient boat ride to Disney Springs
  • Villas are generally more affordable than many other DVC options
  • Often has last-minute availability
  • Great Community Hall with plenty of kids’ activities

Cons

  • Quick service option is just a small outdoor window
  • Apartment-style layout with exterior room entrances
  • Large resort with multiple internal bus stops
  • Farther from the parks compared to other DVC resorts

Tinker Tanchez Thoughts

Old Key West is not as popular as some other DVC resorts but is definitely underrated. For larger families or those needing extra space at a good price, this is my top recommendation. On a recent extended family trip, we stayed in a 2-bedroom villa that was enormous, with a laundry room bigger than most in our own homes! The resort is very peaceful, with many balconies and patios overlooking the golf course or ponds. I highly recommend having a car if you stay here since the resort is large — we usually took the bus only to Magic Kingdom and drove to other parks. We often ordered delivery meals to relax and enjoy dining in the spacious villa together.

Disney’s Riviera Resort (all Disney Vacation Club Resort Villas)

Transportation Options

  • Disney’s Skyliner to EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and select resorts
  • Bus to Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom

Pros

  • Beautiful, upscale resort with a distinctive scent in the lobby and public areas
  • Excellent food options, including the best character meal on property — Topolino’s Terrace breakfast
  • Great quick service and poolside bar
  • Small on-site coffee shop
  • Own Skyliner station for easy access to Hollywood Studios and EPCOT
  • Gorgeous rooms with spacious layouts
  • Studios feature a split bath
  • Unique Tower Studios designed for two guests (smaller than regular studios)
  • Some rooms and restaurants offer EPCOT fireworks views

Cons

  • Lobby is smaller and less grand than other Deluxe resorts
  • Small lobby shop
  • Only one table service restaurant — Topolino’s Terrace — which also serves as a signature/fine dining location

Tinker Tanchez Thoughts

We’ve stayed here and loved the studio — it felt very spacious to us. I’m not a huge fan of the exterior building design or the lobby layout, but once inside, the rooms are some of the nicest among DVC resorts. Topolino’s offers the best character breakfast and a delicious dinner without characters. Being on the Skyliner is super convenient, and you can easily walk to Caribbean Beach for more dining options. This resort is great for families but also works wonderfully for adults-only trips.

Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort (all Disney Vacation Club Resort Villas)

Transportation Options

  • Bus to all parks
  • Boat or walkway to Disney Springs

Pros

  • Beautiful resort with laid-back theming, similar to Old Key West
  • Refurbished rooms are gorgeous
  • Excellent pools
  • Walkway and boat service to Disney Springs for easy access to shopping and dining
  • Last-minute availability often possible
  • Tasty quick service dining
  • Great Community Hall with plenty of kid-friendly activities

Cons

  • Resort layout resembles apartments with exterior villa entry
  • Large property with several internal bus stops
  • Bus transportation is the only option to reach the parks
  • Table service dining is decent but not outstanding

Tinker Tanchez Thoughts

Much like Old Key West, Saratoga Springs is often overlooked but truly special. It’s spacious and beautiful, with the unbeatable convenience of walking or boating to Disney Springs. The rooms were updated not long ago and are beautiful. We’ve really enjoyed staying here and recommend it for families needing extra space.

Stormalong Bay at Disney's Yacht & Beach Club

General Tips for Staying at a Disney Resort

  • Value and Moderate Resorts: These typically have exterior walkways, so paying extra for a “better view” might not be worth it. Because people will likely be walking past your window, you may want to keep the curtains closed for privacy.
  • Air Conditioning: Most Disney Resort rooms have A/C units with motion sensors that turn off when no one is in the room, during sleep, or when the balcony door is open. To override this, you can find instructions by searching YouTube for your specific thermostat model or click here.
  • Bedding: Disney beds come with sheets and a thin blanket; there is no traditional comforter. Each room includes an extra blanket and pillow, but if you need more, just contact Housekeeping. Rooms can get chilly at night, so requesting extra blankets is common.
  • Coffee Makers: Nearly all resorts provide coffee makers, usually pod-style or Keurig machines, and supply coffee pods (you can always ask for more). Deluxe Villas often have drip-style or combo coffee makers similar to Mr. Coffee.

Big Money-Saving Tip: Get Disney Perks at a Great Value

There are three hotels on Disney property that aren’t Disney-owned but offer great benefits at a usually lower price than Disney’s Deluxe Resorts. Located just behind EPCOT and within walking distance of both EPCOT and Hollywood Studios, these Marriott-owned hotels — The Dolphin, Swan, and Swan Reserve — give you access to Extended Evening Hours for Deluxe Resort Guests.

The Swan and Dolphin sit right on Crescent Lake, making it very convenient to walk or boat to both parks. The Swan Reserve is located behind those two, requiring you to cross a main road to reach the Swan and Dolphin before walking or boating to the parks, which is why I usually recommend the Swan or Dolphin over the Swan Reserve. These hotels feel more like moderate-to-deluxe hotels and feature excellent restaurants.

Keep in mind these hotels are run by Marriott, not Disney, so they don’t have Disney theming or atmosphere. They charge resort fees, so factor those into your budget. They also host conferences frequently, which can impact availability and pricing. Their buses run to the parks, but note that the Magic Kingdom bus drops off at the Ticket & Transportation Center — unlike Disney resorts, which drop guests off right at the front gate. Parking fees are also around $36+ tax per day for self-parking.

Note: I recommend these hotels and can book them for you just like the Disney resorts.
